Several professional societies in the field of radiology released a joint statement on the ethics of artificial intelligence, noting that while AI can increase efficiency and accuracy in radiology, it also carries the potential for bias and other systemic errors.

According to the statement’s authors, the ethical use of AI will “promote well-being, minimize harm, and ensure that the benefits and harms are distributed among stakeholders in a just manner.” AI designed for use in radiology must be transparent and dependable, they wrote, with ultimate accountability remaining in the hands of the technology’s human creators.
