The Biden administration has made clear that meeting health-related social needs (HRSNs) is key to lowering health care costs and improving outcomes for Medicaid beneficiaries and those dually eligible for Medicaid and Medicare; indeed, it has issued coordinated statements on this topic from multiple agency leaders within the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and recently released The US Playbook to Address Social Determinants of Health. State Medicaid agencies and their partners now have more ways to address HRSNs with federal support, but not all states are fully prepared to do so.
