The Teaching Health Center Graduate Medical Education (THCGME) program equips doctors to go where they are most needed. In the14 years since the program’s inception, it has produced more than 2,000 primary care physicians and dentists trained to practice in primary care settings, medically underserved communities, and rural areas. Yet, this investment in advancing medical equity is under threat, as the most recent congressional authorization for THCGME expired on September 30, 2023. The risk that THCs will not receive reauthorization and further funding is resulting in hard decisions that threaten their future. And, while THC funding has historically been unstable, the congressional impasse on reauthorization and budget allocation is leading some of the oldest, most well-established THC programs to withdraw...
