In light of the growing threats to U.S. interests around the world, we urgently need to rebuild our military health system. Not too long ago, it was the envy of the world. During Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom, our military health system achieved the highest rate of survival from severe battlefield wounds in the history of warfare. But when U.S. involvement in Iraq and Afghanistan wound down, budget officials at the Pentagon started dismantling much of what had been built. The manpower reductions and facility closures that followed were poorly timed.
