A recent Lancet study found that people who witnessed a close friend or relative falling severely ill due to a Covid-19 infection reported an elevated prevalence of depression and anxiety symptoms compared to those who did not report a significant person in their life contracting the virus.

“Having a family member with SARS-CoV-2 infection has previously been associated with severe psychological distress and multiple studies have shown that having a relative suspected of or diagnosed with COVID-19 is associated with an increased risk of mental illness, including depression, anxiety, and stress-related disorders,” the researchers wrote in their study.
