One of the most ambitious — if abstract — new ideas for AI in Washington is the American Science Acceleration Project, or ASAP, a blueprint floated by Sens. Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) and Mike Rounds (R-S.D.) to speed up American scientific research.

The plan is “to make American science ten times faster by 2030,” according to their announcement, by using AI to tackle super-hard problems like nuclear fusion, superconductors and medical advancements at a breakneck pace.

The plan has gotten buy-in from industry heavyweights including Google and Microsoft, along with leading developers OpenAI, Anthropic and Scale AI, alongside nearly 80 other supporters.

But looming over it is a big, Donald Trump-shaped question: Can it even happen in this political moment?
