In October of 2021, Meta’s CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, laid out his vision for what he called the “Metaverse.” He described it as, “a set of interconnected digital spaces that lets you do things you can’t do in the physical world. Notably, it is characterized by social presence, the feeling that you’re right there with another person, no matter where you happen to be in the world.”

He was so committed to this vision that he renamed the company from Facebook to Meta and committed $10 billion to a project to transform it into a leader in promoting VR and XR technologies.
