Over the past few years, many states have attempted to address the ongoing shortage of healthcare workers by introducing new bills to increase the scope of practice for nurse practitioners and physician assistants (PAs). The goal of each bill was to improve access to care, particularly for patients who may live in areas where it’s difficult to find a doctor.
In response, the American Medical Association (AMA) launched a targeted campaign to fight “scope creep.” Their goal was to gain the momentum necessary to block proposed legislation to modify or expand the practice authority of nonphysicians, including PAs.
