The past two years have seen the passage of several new state data privacy laws in the U.S. and growing momentum around a proposed federal law that would provide one framework for all U.S. consumers, similar to Europe’s GDPR.

These laws have come to address a decade of growth in the ability of third parties to collect and disseminate sensitive personal data about consumers. This data collection in turn enabled an explosion of consumer identity theft and fraud, as well as social-engineered data breaches of businesses. It also exposed millions to personal harassment and “doxxing.”
