With mental health needs mounting worldwide over the past decade, the World Health Organization released new guidance this week to help governments and organizations across many sectors bolster mental health services to protect the well-being of their citizens.

What does the WHO recommend? The organization suggests the following three policy directives for government agencies and health departments.

Strengthen mental health governance: The WHO says directing funding toward resources based on population needs for children and older adults will improve mental health systems. It also discourages the use of psychiatric institutions, saying institutional care “too often delivers poor-quality services, breaches human rights, and is associated with high mortality.”
