Today’s healthcare consumer has never had more options. They’ve also never been more selective. Because they’re shouldering an ever-larger share of overall costs, and because they have more tools to assess providers’ capabilities, consumers are learning that they shouldn’t have to settle for a “good enough” relationship with health systems.

That is as it should be. When empowered consumers raise their expectations, standards of care will follow — and the healthcare system will be all the better for it. This does mean, however, that individual organizations will have to work harder to distinguish themselves among their peers.
