The more things change, the more they stay the same. That is unfortunately true of the sentiments among American nurses, many of whom feel undervalued and overworked. As a result, there could be a shortage of 200,000 to 450,000 nurses in the United States by 2025.

When we first canvassed US nurses in February 2021, while the pandemic was still urgent, it was notable that 22 percent of those in direct patient care said they were considering leaving. In our most recent survey, the figure was 31 percent.
