Listening to Dr. Joseph Coughlin discuss the future of this sector during the NIC Spring Conference last week, I had a strange and unsettling thought: What if we’re doing things all wrong?

I mean no disrespect here. The fact is, I have immense admiration for the people who envision, create and operate communities that serve the oldest among us. On the best days, it’s an incredibly difficult line of work. And as anyone in this field will attest, rough days tend to be far more common.

But as I listened to Dr. Joe, who leads MIT’s AgeLab, I became increasingly uncomfortable. For two reasons.
