CMS reported more than $2.1 billion in net savings from the Medicare Shared Savings Program and $3.1 billion in shared savings from its Accountable Care Organizations program in 2023.

Four things to know:

1. The MSSP and ACO programs achieved $5.2 billion in combined savings in 2023. Both programs achieved their highest annual shared savings since their inception more than 10 years ago.

2. The combined $5.2 billion savings are a fraction of the $839 billion Medicare budget in 2023, highlighting the long road ahead for the MSSP, ACO and other value-based care programs.
