Summary
The US healthcare system spends over $3 trillion annually and is inefficient / ineffective for today’s growing epidemic of chronic diseases which represent 86% of the $3 trillion.
Other than an annual wellness visit, one must already be sick to participate in the US healthcare system. Payers reimburse physicians only for covered medical diagnoses and treatments. Physicians are limited by training and licensure to provide only clinical services. However, clinical care represents only 20% of a person’s health. Value Based Care, MACRA, and other transformations will not address the other 80% of health determinants that are vital to resolve chronic disease. The US does indeed need a transformation… to a more holistic approach to health.
