COVID-19 devastated New York City (NYC), leading to 4.6 years of lost life expectancy between 2019 and 2020, the first time in more than a century that NYC experienced a substantial decline. Declines were experienced among all New Yorkers, with the greatest declines among those identifying as Black or Latino/a—highlighting once again the legacy of inequity and racism entrenched in patterns of disease and death in the United States.
