Just about everyone seems to have a potent opinion about altered states of consciousness (ASC).

Some people say that when they do yoga, for example, and truly get into it, they reach an altered state of consciousness. Their mind wanders into an alternative portal of space and time. A preferred terminology by some is to say they have been mentally transported into a hyperspatial landscape or special plain of existence.

Others claim they can reach a similar headspace but need to be in a sensory deprivation tank to do so. They suggest that earthly noises, visual intrusions, and the like are entirely disruptive and prevent entry into ASC. The only way they get there is by subtracting normal distractions and...
