The US Department of Defense (DoD) has announced the establishment of a new task force called Task Force Lima. The task force will focus on studying and guiding the responsible adoption of generative AI technologies, particularly large language models (LLMs). Task Force Lima will operate under the Pentagon’s Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office (CDAO) and will oversee the exploration and responsible fielding of generative AI capabilities within the DoD.

The DoD has been increasing its investment in AI technologies, with at least 685 AI projects currently underway, including those tied to major weapons systems. The department has requested $1.8 billion for artificial intelligence in its fiscal 2024 budget.
