In an effort to provide better care for new mothers throughout their pregnancy and after delivery, UnitedHealthcare, in collaboration with two health care providers, in launching a bundled payment program for maternity care.

The program, developed in part by Lifeline Medical Associates in New Jersey and Privia Medical Group – Gulf Coast in Texas, builds upon UnitedHealthcare’s existing maternity program which has reduced the number of non-medically indicated cesarean deliveries, lessened the amount of pre-delivery hospital visits, and reduced delivery and newborn related costs.

The new bundled payment program model will reimburse providers for defined episodes of prenatal care, delivery and postpartum services, under a single fee or payment, explained the UnitedHealthcare press release.
