Inaccessibility of nutritious food can lead to the development or improper management of diet-related conditions. Studies show that food insecurity is associated with cardiometabolic conditions including obesity, coronary heart disease, chronic kidney disease and diabetes.¹ For individuals with type 2 diabetes, food insecurity is correlated with poorer glycemic control, reduced self-management behaviors, heightened depressive symptoms and decreased adherence to medication and blood glucose monitoring protocols.

In Hawai‘i, Pacific Islanders and Native Hawaiians are 2.5 times more likely to be diagnosed with diabetes, and they are also more likely to live below the Federal Poverty Level than white residents.²,³Additionally, 85-90%...
