UnitedHealth Group said it will expand its Medicare Advantage health plan offerings to seniors in nearly 300 new counties next year in an aggressive move to compete with rivals for a lucrative government business.

UnitedHealth said its UnitedHealthcare insurance business, which has more than 6.5 million subscribers in its Medicare Advantage plans, will offer individual Medicare Advantage plans in 291 new counties in 2021, bringing the total number of counties in its Medicare Advantage portfolio, including special needs plans, to 2,427 counties in 2021. That’s up from 2,300 in 2020, UnitedHeath said.

“We are increasing our footprint from 46 to 49 states in 2021 by expanding to Michigan, Delaware and Mississippi,” UnitedHealth Group’s UnitedHealthcare business said through a spokeswoman.
