UnitedHealth Group has invested more than $1 billion in housing as the healthcare giant intensifies an increasingly successful strategy to address social determinants of health, the company disclosed Wednesday.

UnitedHealth, which owns the nation’s largest health insurance company and the large medical care provider Optum, said its investments have “helped create more than 25,000 homes for individuals and families,” the company said in a new report. Since 2011, UnitedHealth said its businesses have helped build new affordable housing developments in 31 states and the District of Columbia.
