The Trump administration has narrowed down candidates to lead a crucial technology office.

Ryan Howells, who leads a group that develops guidance for improving access to health data, and Dr. Thomas Keane, a former senior adviser at HHS, are two finalists, according to three people familiar with the administration’s plans who were granted anonymity because of the sensitive nature of the discussions.

The Assistant Secretary for Technology Policy/Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT writes regulations for electronic health records and plays a key role in overseeing data, technology and artificial intelligence strategies and policies in HHS.
