As of October 1, 2019, more than 23 million people were enrolled in Medicare Advantage (MA) plans, representing a growing share of the 67.1 million Americans eligible for Medicare. Individual MA policies, acquired through direct purchase policies, have historically dominated the MA market as 18.5 million beneficiaries purchased individual plans as of October 1, 2019. Concurrently, employer group retiree programs known as Medicare Advantage Employer Group Waiver Plans (MA-EGWP) experienced a steady increase in enrollment to nearly 4.5 million enrollees, or 19.5% of all MA plans. Employer group MA enrollment has increased by almost 321,000, a 7.7% increase, since December 2018.
