The U.S. is now a global outlier in evidence-based dietary recommendations

On January 7, 2026, the Trump administration released the much-anticipated Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2025-2030. The updated guidelines include some of the same general nutrition advice as the Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2020-2025, with some stark departures.

While there are many changes, the most notable include: elevating protein, especially animal but not plant-based protein; promoting full-fat dairy but not reduced-fat or plant-based dairy alternatives; promoting butter, beef tallow, and olive oil as healthy fats but not vegetable oils; advising dramatic reductions in grain consumption, especially refined grains from highly processed foods; and including greater restrictions on added sugars, especially for children under 11 years old who are advised to...
