The next iteration of the accountable care organization

Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs) represent one of the most significant structural reforms in American health care delivery. Born from provisions in the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, ACOs bring together networks of physicians, hospitals, and other health care providers who voluntarily coordinate care for defined patient populations. The fundamental premise is as follows: by aligning financial incentives with quality outcomes, providers become accountable for both the cost and quality of care they deliver, rather than being rewarded solely for the volume of services performed under the dominant payment system, fee-for-service payment.
