COVID-19 is an epidemic transpiring largely out of sight. It’s caused by a microscopically small virus. Infected people are admitted to isolated hospital wards, where they’re kept separate from other patients and even their own family members. When people get better, they emerge from the hospital, usually acting and looking no different from the way they did before they got sick.
