An innovative collaboration between a health care payer and a nonprofit organization to enroll Pennsylvania residents dually eligible for Medicare and Medicaid in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) finds that SNAP participation was linked to a double-digit-percentage reduction in total health care costs and pharmacy costs in both the first and second year of enrollment.

In the United States, food insecurity is prevalent in low-income households and is associated with elevated risk of chronic disease, poor health outcomes, and excess avoidable health care utilization and costs.
