The burden of medical debt in the United States is a growing concern as health care costs continue to rise and many people report trouble affording care. Up to 41 percent of US adults, or 100 million people, are estimated to have some form of medical debt, including bills they are paying off or that are past due; health care expenses put on a credit card; or debt owed to a bank, collection agency, or other lender. This is a uniquely US problem—medical debt is incurred by both the uninsured and the insured, including those with commercial insurance, Medicaid, or Medicare coverage.
