Of the many problems facing our nation’s healthcare system today, none is more serious or shocking than the poor quality of maternity care: the U.S. has the highest rates of mortality for both infants and mothers among the world’s advanced economies. Pregnant women in the U.S. are three times as likely to die in the U.S. as they are in Australia, Britain, Canada, France, Germany, and other developed countries. The problem is getting worse, not better: maternal mortality rates in the U.S nearly doubled between 2018 and 2021. Clearly, major improvements in maternity care are needed to address this.
