In the not-so-distant past, advanced artificial intelligence (AI) was a luxury reserved for large tech giants and specialized research labs. Today, however, the dramatic reduction in the cost of developing large language models (LLMs) is transforming AI from an exclusive, high-cost resource into a ubiquitous, utility-like service—akin to electricity or water.
Many transformative industries have followed similar paths, such as electricity, shipping and more recently, cloud computing. Once a novel and expensive technology, electricity was eventually standardized and made affordable by innovations from the likes of Thomas Edison and Nikola Tesla. As costs plummeted, factory automation enabled widespread adoption and the proliferation of household appliances.
