While federal legislation to make social media safer for kids remains stalled, YouTube and Meta have unveiled policies this week to protect young users. The different approaches highlight their diverging philosophies on the issue.
Meta is partnering with Childhelp, a support organization for at-risk kids, to develop a new curriculum for middle school teachers to show students how to develop online safety skills. Topics include how to recognize grooming, sextortion scams and online exploitation, as well as how to find help. Meta says it removes known scammers from its platform but emphasizes the importance of young people having those skills.
It’s also working with educational platform LifeSmarts to adapt the material for high schoolers.
