By any reasonable standard, President Trump’s nominee to lead the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services appears up to the job. (Which, by the way, is more than be said for the new boss at the Department of Health and Human Services.)

During a mostly friendly nomination hearing last week, Mehmet Oz, MD, promised that if confirmed, he will “work tirelessly to ensure CMS provides Americans access to superb care, especially to those who need it the most: our young, disabled and elderly.” In other words, he said all the right things.

But there was no avoiding the proverbial elephant in the room: proposed cuts to Medicaid-program funding. Such reductions, should they reach senior living (and it’s hard to believe...
