Newspaper headlines highlight the surge in Obamacare premiums affecting millions of Americans after Congress failed to act in Dec. to extend enhanced subsidies. But this is merely one of many symptoms of a healthcare system that appears to be in need of comprehensive reform.

Millions of Americans on the Affordable Care Act exchanges are facing drastic increases in premiums. These are people who don’t get their health insurance from an employer and don’t qualify for Medicaid or Medicare. Many are self-employed or small business owners. More than 20 million enrollees are now seeing their premium costs rise by 114% this year.
