In a recent post, we reviewed several findings and implications from 2017 MIPS performance data released by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). One major take-away is that small practices performed considerably worse in terms of Composite Performance Score (CPS) and financial penalties compared to their large practice counterparts (Exhibit). These findings suggest that CMS may need to support smaller practices with more than technical assistance support and existing policy measures (e.g., allowing small practices to participate in virtual groups) to create an equitable payment system and minimize unintended consequences.
