Alabama, Hawaii and Michigan have the highest share of Medicare-eligible residents enrolled in Medicare Advantage plans in 2023, while Alaska has the least, according to an Aug. 9 report from KFF.

The national rate is 51 percent. In Puerto Rico, 94 percent of Medicare members are enrolled in Medicare Advantage.

KFF noted that MA penetration rates can vary widely within individual states. In Florida, penetration rates range from 20 percent in Key West to 79 percent in Miami-Dade County.

States ranked by percentage of Medicare beneficiaries enrolled in an MA plan:

Alabama: 60 percent

Hawaii: 60 percent

Michigan: 60 percent

Connecticut: 59 percent

Maine: 59 percent

Florida: 58 percent

Oregon: 57 percent

Louisiana: 56 percent
