The New York State Department of Health just reported a massive surge in flu cases statewide, with 71,000+ cases recorded as of last week. Per the state, that figure represents the highest number of cases ever recorded in a single week. This seems to largely be the trend nationwide, as nearly every state is indicating sky-rocketing flu numbers over the last month. Health officials are concerned that many of these cases may be due to a new flu strain, known as subclade K, which may be a slightly more virulent strand capable of evading existing immune responses.
