A study by an international campaign group is calling on social media platforms to do more to protect scientists from mistreatment on their platforms, Nature reported Jan. 28.

In conducting the study, Avaaz looked at disinformation related to three major scientific figures, including Anthony Fauci, MD, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, between January and June 2021.

Within that time frame, the researchers found 85 posts across Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube and Telegram that contained misinformation targeting the scientists and their institutions. Collectively the posts had 1.9 million interactions. By July 2021, 49...
