Don’t get me wrong, 50,000,000 is a big number. The story it tells, though, is even bigger. In January, a Kaiser analysis reported on 2023’s finalized authorization numbers. A staggering 50,000,000 authorizations were determined for Medicare Advantage members.

That’s an average of two authorization determinations per enrollee. Quite impactful.

If you take a step back and realize that Medicare Advantage plans continue to be growing in popularity, and thereby membership, it’s actually kind of expected. If 2022 had 42 million authorizations dished out, naturally, with growth, the big 50M isn’t too much of a stretch to get to.

Here’s where it starts to get interesting. Of the 50 million authorizations, the authorization-denial rate went down from 7.4%...
