Katie Smith Sloan didn’t mince words when she addressed senior living operators this week. The president and CEO of LeadingAge made it clear: innovation must be a driving force.

That message — equal parts challenge and invitation — hung in the air like a call to arms. “One of our most important roles as leaders is to think into the future, to know what our North Star is,” Sloan told a packed room at the organization’s annual meeting. “As a sector, I believe our North Star has to be driven by innovation.”

She’s right. Aging services are standing at the intersection of opportunity and urgency. Demand for senior care is surging, fueled by “very real demographics,” as Sloan put it....
