The impact Elon Musk is singlehandedly having on the field of neurotechnology and brain computer interfaces through Neuralink is both undeniable and important.

But his unverified, cryptic updates and the hype that follows distract and distort the realities of the implanted BCI space.

Take last month’s podcast comment about a patient moving a computer mouse with their brain. Not only is Neuralink years behind the curve, but Mr. Musk has refused to publicize important details of the study, such as how cursor movement is measured and evaluated across patients and time.

Protecting information to prioritize profits over scientific norms is not noble or groundbreaking. It’s also a bad look for this nascent industry.
