British health officials have urged pregnant women to take a new vaccine to protect their babies from a potentially serious winter illness.

Respiratory syncytial virus is very common and usually causes a mild, cold-like illness. But infants and the elderly are at greater risk of severe disease and even death.

In fact, RSV is one of the biggest drivers of infant mortality around the world.

Almost all children (90%) will catch the disease at some point in their first two years of life. In the U.K., around 20,000 infants under the age of one are hospitalized every year. Between 20 and 30 babies tragically die each season.
