Health care is a major expense for US families, and because the federal government provides or subsidizes health insurance for most Americans, it is also a major expense for the government.

While health care is valuable and worth paying for, its high cost means families and taxpayers must get value for their spending. As health scholars at the American Enterprise Institute (AEI), the Brookings Institution, and the Bipartisan Policy Center (BPC), we believe there are opportunities to rein in health care costs and ensure that health care dollars are spent more effectively while still ensuring access to needed care.
