The COVID-19 pandemic illuminated the connection between long-term funding and preparedness in the United States. That is, the underfunding of public health, and the lack of system integration and interoperability between health care and public health, exacerbated the pandemic. As a result, the US led the world in COVID-19-related deaths, and we faced the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression. It also exposed, yet again, the persistent social and structural determinants that lead to health inequities. As we move gradually toward a new normal, we have a unique opportunity to address the many flaws that have long existed in our systems.
