ABSTRACT

US health care has long sought to balance the health needs of individuals and communities, and efforts in bioethics aim to address tension between individual autonomy and the common good. In population health management, accountable care organizations (ACOs) are designed to create efficiencies by integrating and coordinating provider networks for defined patient populations often based on geography and physician practice patterns. From an ethical perspective, a lack of patient engagement in ACOs is problematic in that population health becomes something that happens to them, instead of the patients taking a participatory role in their health.
