Dengue virus, little-known to most in the United States, is causing a record-breaking number of infections this year. The numbers are so staggering—9.7 million cases in the Americas so far this year—that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently issued a health advisory for physicians and the public to be aware of the increased risk of dengue infection in the United States.

What Is Dengue?

Dengue is a viral illness spread through the bite of an infected mosquito. It is very common in tropical and subtropical regions, with the World Health Organization estimating that between 100 and 400 million people worldwide are infected each year.
