Last year, the CMS Innovation Center launched the Quality Pathway strategic initiative to strengthen the focus on quality in alternative payment models. Since it was created, the CMS Innovation Center has tested models to reduce program expenditures in Medicare and Medicaid while preserving or enhancing quality of care. The Quality Pathway supports our Center’s mission by enhancing our focus on quality of care and exploring opportunities to scale and expand models based on their successful approaches to improving quality.

Principles of the Quality Pathway include: 1) alignment of quality goals within models, 2) advancement of person-centered measurement, including the use of patient and caregiver-reported outcomes and experience measures, and 3) design of evaluations to effectively assess the impact of models...
