Rama On Healthcare (ROH): Sachin, SCAN’s new campaign makes a bold claim: “Health Insurance Is Broken.” What inspired this message?
Sachin Jain (SJ): We wanted to speak the truth that millions of Americans—especially older adults—already know. Health insurance is frustrating. Long hold times, confusing coverage rules, unexpected pharmacy costs—these are daily realities. Our campaign is not just marketing; it’s a cultural statement. It’s about empathy, honesty, and being real with the people we serve.
Our campaign is not just marketing; it’s a cultural statement. It’s about empathy, honesty, and being real with the people we serve.
ROH: The press release says this campaign is “not just another Medicare ad.” What makes it different?
SJ: Too often, healthcare marketing paints an unrealistic picture. We’re choosing radical candor instead. We’re naming the problem and inviting others to do the same. That’s how change in the healthcare industry will begin. We’re not afraid to say our baby is ugly if it means we can make it better.
We’re naming the problem and inviting others to do the same.
ROH: How has the campaign been received?
SJ: A member wrote to me and said, “SCAN was just right on the money. They didn’t bash any other insurance companies. They said, ‘We know you’re frustrated. We’re going to help you.’ And I thought, yes. You are.” 42% of Medicare beneficiaries report delaying or skipping care due to cost or coverage gaps. People get it.
ROH: What about your competitors?
SJ: Some competitors actually responded to a recent LinkedIn post and said, “We’re not broken.” All I can say is—denial is not a strategy in 2025.
Consumers want more honesty. More candor. Actually, forget what they want—they deserve it.
The first step to fixing anything is admitting it’s broken. If you’re not comfortable enough to say our industry needs a reboot, you’re not listening to what consumers are telling us. Or worse, you just don’t care.
The first step to fixing anything is admitting it’s broken.
We’re all part of a system that too often ignores the immediate needs of our members. The faster we admit that, the faster we can start making it better.
ROH: SCAN is a nonprofit. How does that shape your approach to this campaign?
SJ: Being a nonprofit gives us the freedom to prioritize truth over shareholder returns. We’re not here to maximize profit—we’re here to serve. This campaign reflects our roots, going back to the “12 Angry Seniors” who founded SCAN in 1977. They were frustrated by the system. We’re channeling that same energy today.
