Make America Healthy Again (MAHA): Recognizing Brokers as Allies

Today, RamaOnHealthcare talks with Dr. Sachin Jain, CEO of SCAN Group and SCAN Health Plan, not-for-profit organizations focused on improving care for older adults by meeting their needs throughout the aging process. Never one to shy away from controversy, Dr. Jain used a recent Forbes article to explore the untapped potential of health insurance brokers in advancing the Make America Healthy Again (MAHA) movement, the initiative led by HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. We sat down with Dr. Jain to learn more about why brokers may be the key to mobilizing a national health transformation.

RamaOnHealthcare (ROH): In your article, you suggest that health insurance brokers could play a pivotal role in improving public health. Why focus on them?

Sachin Jain (SJ): Brokers are already embedded in communities and have regular contact with people making critical decisions about their health coverage. They’re in a unique position to influence behavior and connect individuals to resources—if we equip them with the right tools and incentives.

Brokers are already embedded in communities….

ROH: Some might say brokers are just salespeople. What’s your response to that?

SJ: That’s a narrow view. Many brokers act as trusted advisors. They help people navigate a complex system and often serve as the only consistent point of contact in someone’s healthcare journey.

Many brokers act as trusted advisors.

ROH: You mention the MAHA Commission’s early focus on childhood illness. What other areas should be on its radar?

SJ: Chronic disease prevention in older adults is a major opportunity. We spend so much money and time on reactive care. We need to shift toward proactive, community-based strategies that keep people healthy longer.

Chronic disease prevention in older adults is a major opportunity.

ROH: A lot of people in the healthcare industry might shy away from engaging with MAHA. But you don’t. Why?

SJ: We all agree that we have a broken system, and it’s incumbent on us to look for good ideas wherever we can find them. That’s how we iterate and improve the system.

ROH: What would success look like if brokers were more involved in public health?

SJ: It would mean brokers are trained in health promotion, incentivized to support wellness, and integrated into broader public health efforts. They’d be helping people not just choose plans, but also access preventive care, screenings, and behavioral health services.

…but also access preventive care, screenings, and behavioral health services.

ROH: What’s your call to action for policymakers and health leaders?

SJ: Don’t overlook the infrastructure that already exists. The MAHA Movement doesn’t need to build from scratch—it needs to mobilize what’s already there. That starts with recognizing brokers as allies in the fight for a healthier America.

The MAHA Movement doesn’t need to build from scratch….
