In the final report of a three-part series published last year about the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on nursing homes, the Office of the Inspector General found “monumental and ongoing staffing challenges” as well as “challenges with implementing effective infection control practices and opportunities for improvement.”

To those of us in the industry, this comes as little surprise. Long-term care facilities have struggled for years to recruit and maintain staff, and the pandemic shone a blistering spotlight on how staffing shortages and other constraints undermine infection prevention in these settings.

Much attention has been given to taking these lessons to heart and preparing for future crises, particularly with solutions that address long-standing resource limitations.
